Arsenal vs Crystal Palace (2-2): The Eagles qualify for the draw against the Emirates

Liverpool delay title bid as Arsenal held to home draw

Arsenal postponed Liverpool’s Premier League title celebrations after a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace, extending their unbeaten run to 12 games in all competitions. Despite winning two games in the top flight, the Gunners were brought low by a determined Palace side, who showed resilience and quality, particularly in the second half. With both teams aiming for key cup semi-finals, this match provided ideal, if slightly frustrating, preparation for what lies ahead.

First half – Kiwior and Trossard on target

Needing a win just to delay Liverpool’s inevitable coronation, Arsenal struck early when Martin Ødegaard’s inviting free-kick was met by a bullet header from Jakub Kiwior, giving the hosts the lead within three minutes.

But Palace, who have an FA Cup semi-final on the horizon, were anything but passive. Eddie Nketiah headed just wide, and Eberechi Eze equalized with a superb volley from the edge of the box after some fine build-up.

Although Palace were dangerous on the counterattack, Arsenal regained the lead just before halftime. Leandro Trossard collected a pass in the box and fired low past Dean Henderson for his third goal in two games.

Second half – Mateta’s magic moment

The second half started slowly, but Palace came alive after the hour mark, creating a flurry of chances. Justin Devenney, Marc Guéhi, and Ismaïla Sarr all squandered headed chances, either misplaced or pushed away by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya. Arsenal substitute Bukayo Saka almost saved the game, but Henderson made a stunning reflex save to deny him from close range.

Just as the Gunners looked set to secure all three points, disaster struck. William Saliba was denied possession by Jean-Philippe Mateta, who fired a stunning 35-yard lob over Raya, which grazed the crossbar before ending up in the back of the net. It was a moment of individual brilliance that saved the point for the visitors.

What this means

With Arsenal now unbeaten in 43 Premier League games after opening the scoring, this draw ends any hopes of the title. Mikel Arteta will now fully focus on the UEFA Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain. As for Crystal Palace, still without a win in four league games, this spirited performance will give them renewed momentum ahead of their FA Cup clash against Aston Villa.

Key facts

  • Arsenal are unbeaten in 43 Premier League games when scoring first.
  • Leandro Trossard has scored three goals in his last two appearances.
  • Jean-Philippe Mateta has scored three goals in his last four appearances for Palace.

And then?

Arsenal travel to France to face PSG in the Champions League semi-final, while Palace prepare for their FA Cup semi-final against Aston Villa at Wembley.
