Brighton vs Newcastle (1-1): The Seagulls hold the Magpies to a draw and secure a surprise draw at the Amex

Newcastle United’s hopes of finishing in the Premier League’s top five were dealt a serious blow after a 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion. In a game dominated by controversial VAR decisions, the Magpies saw two penalties potentially ruled out before converting a third to secure a point. The result extends their run of away wins to eight, denting their momentum at a crucial stage of European competition.

First half – Minteh returns to haunt his former club

Despite their desire to secure a result that could lift them above struggling Arsenal, Newcastle got off to a sluggish start. The opening exchanges were hesitant, although the visitors did create a few promising chances. Harvey Barnes forced Bart Verbruggen into a routine save before Joe Willock fired narrowly over after a breakthrough down the left.

Brighton quickly capitalized on these missed opportunities. Just before the half-hour mark, former Newcastle player Yankuba Minteh produced a moment of brilliance, cutting through the middle before curling a precise left-footed shot into the far corner, giving the Seagulls the lead.

It was a stark reminder for the visitors of their lack of clinical precision, and they went into the break trailing.

Second half – Penalty shootout chaos and a late equalizer

Eddie Howe’s side came back stronger after the restart, showing renewed determination in their quest for an equalizer. Frustration began to mount when Mats Wieffer, already booked, lunged at Sandro Tonali, a tackle that appeared to warrant a second booking. Referee Craig Pawson disagreed, and VAR chose not to intervene.

The controversy intensified when substitute Anthony Gordon was brought down by Tariq Lamptey just inside the box, forcing Pawson to award a penalty. However, VAR ruled that the initial contact had taken place outside the box, and the penalty was overturned. The same sequence occurred again when Joe Willock collapsed under pressure from Jan Paul van Hecke – a penalty that was initially awarded before being overturned after a review.

Newcastle’s persistence finally paid off late on. A Fabian Schär free-kick hit the wall off Yasin Ayari’s outstretched arm, and this time, after another lengthy VAR review, the penalty stood. Alexander Isak stepped up and calmly converted the penalty, equalizing.

The impasse frustrates both sides

Both teams pushed for victory in added time, with Diego Gomez squandering Brighton’s best chance before Callum Wilson fired over the bar. In the end, neither team managed to score the decisive goal, and a draw put their European ambitions in doubt.
