Jackson propels Chelsea to a crucial win
Nicolas Jackson’s first-half goal gave Chelsea a crucial 1-0 win over Everton, keeping their UEFA Champions League qualification hopes alive and extending their unbeaten home run against the Toffees to 30. It was a hard-fought night at Stamford Bridge, but the Blues’ attacking persistence and defensive solidity ultimately saw them prevail. Everton, meanwhile, missed an opportunity to move closer to the European places after two consecutive defeats.
First half – Jackson breaks his drought
Chelsea started strongly, aware of the importance of three points, but Beto’s introduction kept Robert Sánchez and his defenders on their toes. Noni Madueke was lively from the start, unleashing a dangerous shot that forced Jordan Pickford into a smart save. Moments later, Marc Cucurella missed a golden opportunity after Pickford’s unconvincing free-kick.
Chelsea were not far from opening the scoring, however. Trevoh Chalobah beat Beto and set up Enzo Fernandez, who quickly found Jackson. The striker didn’t miss the mark, sending a low shot into the top corner, ending a long goal drought that had lasted since mid-December.
Chelsea maintained their pressure for the remainder of the half, with Fernandez and Madueke both having further goals disallowed, while Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucouré spurned a rare chance for the visitors before the break.
Second half – Chelsea hold on
After the break, Chelsea continued to push for a second goal, with Madueke testing Pickford again after thwarting Vitaliy Mykolenko. A nervous moment ensued for Everton when Pickford had to scramble to beat Jackson to Nathan Patterson’s clumsy backpass. The visitors began to get their revenge, and Jack Harrison set up Beto for a powerful shot that Sánchez saved well before Idrissa Gueye tested the Chelsea goalkeeper in turn.
Despite Everton’s late comeback, Chelsea’s defense held firm. Pickford continued his fine form, keeping out a Madueke header and Cucurella’s corner attempt, but the visitors struggled to create clear-cut chances. Jackson thought he had scored a second goal late on, but VAR intervened and ruled it out for offside.
What this means
Thanks to their two consecutive wins, Chelsea climbed to fourth place and maintained their momentum ahead of a busy schedule, including a UEFA Conference League semi-final. Enzo Maresca’s team will need to be consistent in recent weeks as they look to qualify for the Champions League. Everton, meanwhile, must bounce back after two consecutive defeats, but given the quality of their opponents, they too remain in the race for a European spot.
