Everton vs Ipswich (2-2): The Toffees lose a two-goal lead

Everton squandered a two-goal lead in the final 3 pm Premier League kick-off at Goodison Park, thanks to a spirited second-half comeback from Ipswich Town that saw the visitors snatch a 2-2 draw. Goals from Beto and Dwight McNeil looked to have put the Toffees in control, but a quickfire strike from Julio Enciso and a header from George Hirst ensured a draw. The result extends Everton’s winless run to six games, while Ipswich salvaged a rare point in a largely forgotten season.

First half – Everton lead before Enciso’s strike

The Toffees were determined to end their final half at Goodison on a high, and a match against already-relegated Ipswich seemed the perfect opportunity. Everton started well and created the better chances, finally breaking the deadlock midway through the first half. Carlos Alcaraz crossed from the right, and Beto rose above the post to beat Alex Palmer with a powerful header.

Dwight McNeil doubled the hosts’ lead shortly after in spectacular fashion, cutting inside from the right flank before firing a thunderous left-footed strike into the far corner.

However, the Toffees’ two-goal lead was sensationally halved before half-time as Enciso unleashed a 30-yard rocket into the top right corner to spark the visitors into life.

Second half – Hirst completes his comeback

Enciso almost equalized shortly after the restart but opted to shoot from distance rather than put it on target for Omari Hutchinson, whose effort was easily saved by Jordan Pickford. Ipswich continued to push forward and was finally rewarded when Hutchinson beat his opponent down the right flank before crossing to the far post, where George Hirst arrived and headed home the 2-2.

Now back on track, Kieran McKenna’s side looked more likely to snatch victory late in the match. However, despite a better performance, the visitors were unable to score a third goal. Everton, on the other hand, never really recovered from their lead and were left to rue another missed opportunity at home.

What this means

For Ipswich, this result demonstrates the determination they lacked at the start of the season but does little to jeopardize their imminent return to the Championship. Everton now turn their attention to their final game at Goodison Park in two weeks, where they hope to end a disappointing season on a more positive note.
