Trent Alexander Arnold marked his return from injury with a late winner as Liverpool secured a 1-0 win over Leicester City, moving to within three points of the Premier League title. While the Reds celebrated a crucial victory in their title quest, the result confirmed Leicester’s relegation after a valiant, but ultimately unsuccessful, performance at the King Power Stadium.
Fast start, near misses, and lots of drama
Liverpool started brightly and, in just three minutes, Mohamed Salah hit the target twice, confirming the visitors’ early dominance. However, Leicester was not passive and found the target through Wilfred Ndidi, following impressive work from Stephy Mavididi down the left flank.
The opening exchanges set the tone for a chaotic first half, with Dominik Szoboszlai, Salah, and Ibrahima Konaté forcing Mads Hermansen into action. The Danish goalkeeper had a brilliant night, making crucial saves from Cody Gakpo and Konaté, while Ndidi cleared off his line to keep the score at 0-0. Despite Liverpool’s pressure, the Foxes held firm until the break.
One way traffic and late heartbreak for Leicester
The second half resumed in a similar vein, with Hermansen continuing to keep Leicester in the game thanks to fine saves from Szoboszlai and Kostas Tsimikas. The Reds hit the post twice, first through Salah and then Diogo Jota, while Luis Diaz shot over and Gakpo saw several attempts saved.
Against the run of play, Leicester briefly thought they had taken the lead thanks to a goal from Conor Coady, but VAR ruled the match out for a foul by Patson Daka on Alisson Becker. It was a crucial moment, as Liverpool regained control and finally found the net.
With just minutes left, Alexander-Arnold scored a sensational goal, sending the away fans into raptures. His goal secured Liverpool’s second consecutive victory and secured the title.
Reds on the verge of victory, Foxes on the decline
For Liverpool, this result brings them closer to a second league title in five years, having recorded 13 wins in their last 16 against Leicester. Arne Slot’s team is reaching its peak at the right time and looks destined for another domestic title.
Leicester’s fate, however, was sealed by defeat. Despite a spirited performance and another impressive display from goalkeeper Hermansen, the Foxes conceded their ninth consecutive home game without scoring and will now face a return to the Championship next season.
