Leicester vs Southampton 2-0 match report: The Foxes finally win thanks to their departing legend

Leicester City ended a nine-game Premier League losing streak and finally found the back of the net at home, winning 2-0 against already-condemned Southampton at the King Power Stadium. A historic goal from Jamie Vardy and a fortuitous second from Jordan Ayew gave the Foxes a rare victory, while Southampton’s miserable campaign reached a new low with the confirmation of their last-place finish.

First half – Vardy scores Leicester’s 199th goal

In a match where little more than honor was at stake, both teams entered the game in fine form, relegation long since a foregone conclusion. Yet it was Leicester who showed the most urgency early on, and they were rewarded in the 22nd minute. Bilal El Khannouss’s low pass into the box was met by Jamie Vardy, who scored his 199th goal for the club, ending the Foxes’ run of nine consecutive home games without a goal.

The match was halted shortly after due to a bizarre incident involving referee David Webb, who had to be replaced by the fourth official after a collision with Jordan Ayew. The stoppage did little to disrupt Leicester’s rhythm, and a few minutes after the restart, Ayew turned into a goalscorer. His first free-kick hit the wall, but the rebound fell gently and the striker recovered perfectly, slotting into a crowded penalty area to double the lead.

Second half – The Saints show little fight

The Foxes continued to dominate the second half and could have made it 3-0 when El Khannouss beat Taylor Harwood-Bellis, but his curled shot sailed over the bar. Southampton eventually got the ball through Mateus Fernandes, but his close-range effort was ruled out for offside, snuffing out what little threat the visitors had.

As the match progressed, the south coast side failed to find an answer. Leicester, on the other hand, remained dynamic and came close again when El Khannouss recovered the ball in deep space before deflecting his shot wide. A highlight came late in the match: 16-year-old Jake Evans made his first-team debut, offering a glimmer of hope in an overall lackluster season for the Foxes.

What this means

While Leicester’s victory won’t change their relegation fate, it gives fans something to cheer about and closes the gap to 18th-placed Ipswich. Southampton, meanwhile, remain at the bottom of the table and are now guaranteed a 20th-place finish. They need at least one point from their remaining games to avoid matching Derby County’s infamous 11-point season.

Key statistics
