A crucial 94th-minute goal from Matheus Nunes gave Manchester City a crucial 2-1 victory over Aston Villa, extending their dominance in the tie with a 15th consecutive home league win over the Villans. The victory keeps City in the hunt for UEFA Champions League qualification, while Villa missed a key opportunity to extend their unbeaten away run in the Premier League.
First Half – Fast Start and Dramatic Beginning
Aston Villa opened the scoring and almost surprised the home side in the first 20 seconds when Marcus Rashford hit the post with a powerful shot. City responded quickly and accurately, however, with Bernardo Silva scoring in the seventh minute after an excellent build-up from Omar Marmoush.
Villa didn’t trail for long. VAR awarded a penalty after Ruben Dias fouled Jacob Ramsey in the box. Rashford calmly converted the penalty past Stefan Ortega, equalizing for the visitors in the 17th minute.
As the half progressed, both teams battled for a second goal: De Bruyne was denied by Emiliano Martínez, while Ortega stood tall to prevent Rashford from scoring his second.
Second half – City in control, Villa threaten
After the break, City were able to impose themselves thanks to long periods of possession, but struggled to penetrate Villa’s well-drilled defense. James McAtee almost caught Martínez out with a lobbed shot that went wide, and Rashford remained threatening on the counter, firing into the side netting after beating Ortega.
City’s persistence looked to have paid off late on when Marmoush found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside, keeping the game evenly balanced heading into added time.
Added time winner: Nunes the hero
Just as the points appeared level, City struck on goal. Substitute Jeremy Doku found space on the wing and delivered a low cross to the far post, where Matheus Nunes, unmarked, coolly slotted home the winner in the 94th minute. The result sparked wild celebrations and gave Guardiola’s men a huge boost to their top-four finish.
What this means
Manchester City’s ninth home win of the year brought City one step closer to qualifying for next season’s Champions League. Despite a spirited performance, Villa missed the chance to extend their unbeaten away run to four games, a first since the 2008/09 season.
And then?
Manchester City will travel to Fulham for their next league match as the season draws to a close. Aston Villa will return to Villa Park to face fellow European hopefuls Nottingham Forest.
