Nottingham Forest vs Brentford (0-2): Bees deal Forest’s UCL hopes a blow

Nottingham Forest’s chances of finishing in the top five of the Premier League were seriously dented by a 2-0 home defeat to Brentford. The result leaves Forest vulnerable in the race for UEFA Champions League qualification, while Brentford recorded a sixth win in their last eight league away games, keeping their slim European hopes alive.

First half – Schade strikes after a defensive error

Forest went into this match knowing that a win would move them up to third place, but their performance failed to live up to the challenge. Brentford started strongly and could have taken the lead when Mikkel Damsgaard’s precise free-kick found Sepp van den Berg, whose powerful header was superbly saved by Matz Sels.

The home side struggled to establish themselves and were left frustrated when Keane Lewis-Potter avoided a second yellow card for a foul on Anthony Elanga. Forest’s troubles worsened as halftime approached when a misjudged long pass from Nathan Collins unbalanced Ola Aina, allowing Kevin Schade to pounce and give Brentford the lead, scoring his first goal in nine appearances.

Second half – Wissa punishes the wasteful forest

Nuno Espírito Santo’s side showed greater urgency after the break, with Elanga going close with a low shot expertly pushed away by Mark Flekken. Despite dominating possession and Brentford pushing deep into their half, Forest failed to create many clear-cut chances.

Brentford took ruthless advantage of the home side’s desperation in the 70th minute. A long clearance from Flekken was misread by the Forest defense, and Yoane Wissa rushed in to brilliantly chip Sels and double the lead. Forest lost steam late on, but their quality in the final third was lacking, and the visitors failed to seriously trouble Flekken for the remainder of the match.

What this means

Two consecutive home defeats have jeopardized Forest’s Champions League hopes, and they could drop out of the top five depending on results elsewhere. Brentford, meanwhile, retains a slim chance of European qualification thanks to their eighth-place finish, although they will need a perfect result and positive results in the FA Cup and league.
