Manchester City reached their 14th FA Cup final with a commanding 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest. Goals from Rico Lewis and Joško Gvardiol gave the Cityzens a seventh consecutive semi-final victory, as they will now face Crystal Palace in the final next month.
First Half – Fast Start Sets the Tone
In their 28th appearance at the new Wembley, Manchester City wasted no time asserting their authority. Within just two minutes, Mateo Kovačić burst through the Forest midfield to set up Rico Lewis, who calmly slotted the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box.
City’s early pressure was relentless, with Jack Grealish constantly causing problems down the flanks. Forest, on the other hand, struggled to find their feet, boasting just 23% possession at halftime. They thought they had found the answer when Chris Wood turned in a cutback from Callum Hudson-Odoi, but the offside flag cut short any celebrations. City’s dominance ensured they took a deserved 1-0 halftime lead, while Forest failed to register a single shot.
Second half – Gvardiol’s header seals the deal
Just like in the first half, City regained the upper hand after the break. Just six minutes into the second half, Omar Marmoush took a precise corner, and Joško Gvardiol rose higher than the post to beat Matz Sels with a powerful header, doubling City’s lead and putting one foot in the final.
City could have extended their lead with a Marmoush pass, but Sels made a fine save. Despite City’s control, Forest responded with vigor late on, hitting the target three times through Morgan Gibbs-White and Taiwo Awoniyi. However, their efforts were unrewarded, and Guardiola’s men finished the game professionally to secure the victory.
What this means
Manchester City’s victory not only extends their FA Cup ambitions but also keeps alive their hopes of winning another domestic trophy under Pep Guardiola. Nottingham Forest’s courageous cup run ended in the semi-finals, but the players can hold their heads high after a nail-biting second half that nearly left the favorites sweating.
