Venus Williams Heaps Praise on Father ‘King’ Richard for Shielding Her and Sister Serena From Outside Pressures
Tennis legend Venus Williams has once again honored her father, Richard Williams—known affectionately as “King Richard”—for the critical role he played in shaping not only her career but also the remarkable legacy of her sister, Serena Williams. In a recent interview, Venus opened up about the early days of their journey in tennis, reflecting on how their father fiercely protected them from the pressures of fame and the scrutiny of the outside world. “He created a world where we could grow, learn, and dream without being crushed by expectations,” Venus said. “He was our protector long before he was our coach.”
Richard Williams, who famously taught Venus and Serena the game on the public courts of Compton, California, has long been a polarizing figure in tennis. But for his daughters, he was a visionary—one who not only believed they could dominate a sport that had been largely inaccessible to young Black girls, but who also designed a blueprint to help them navigate it without losing themselves. Venus credited her father for intentionally keeping them away from the junior tournament circuit for much of their youth, ensuring they avoided burnout and the harsh judgment that often comes with early success. “He kept us grounded,” Venus shared. “We weren’t just tennis players to him. We were his daughters first.”
The tennis world has come to recognize the brilliance of Richard’s methods, especially as both sisters went on to become Grand Slam champions and global icons. Venus emphasized how her father’s foresight allowed them to mature on their own terms, away from the media’s constant gaze. “So many young athletes get overwhelmed or lost in the spotlight,” she said. “But my dad taught us to define ourselves—not let the world do it for us.” The sisters’ ability to handle fame, pressure, and even controversy with grace and strength is often traced back to the values instilled by their father from day one. As the 2021 biopic King Richard helped bring his story to a broader audience, Venus believes it was only a glimpse into the depth of her father’s love and sacrifices. “That movie told part of the story,” she said. “But what it didn’t fully capture was how deeply he believed in us—even when no one else did. That belief built our foundation.” Today, both Venus and Serena stand as living legacies of that foundation—not just as tennis champions, but as empowered women who continue to break barriers on and off the court. With her heartfelt tribute, Venus reminded the world that behind two of the greatest athletes in history stood a father who dared to dream—and dared to protect.
