Victoria Mboko Eyes Rematch with Coco Gauff in Canada After “Very Difficult” First Encounter

Rising Canadian tennis star Victoria Mboko has made headlines ahead of the National Bank Open in Toronto by expressing her desire for a rematch against American sensation Coco Gauff. In a recent interview, Mboko reflected on their previous meeting, which she described as “very difficult,” but added that the experience only fueled her determination to grow. Now, with the home crowd behind her and increased confidence in her game, the 17-year-old says she’s ready to challenge Gauff again—this time on her own turf.

Mboko and Gauff first crossed paths in junior competition, where Gauff’s power and pace proved too much for the young Canadian. But rather than being discouraged, Mboko says that match was a turning point in her development. “That match showed me the level I needed to reach,” she recalled. “Coco played with such intensity and speed—it was hard, yes, but also inspiring. It gave me the motivation to work harder.” Since then, Mboko has made significant strides, climbing the ITF and WTA rankings and earning praise for her athleticism and fighting spirit.

Now entering the 2025 Canadian swing with renewed form and home advantage, Mboko is eager for another opportunity to prove herself. While still early in her WTA career, the teenager has shown flashes of brilliance, including a run to the semifinals in a recent ITF Challenger event and strong showings in doubles. “To play Coco again would be an honor,” she said. “She’s one of the best in the world, but I think I’ve grown a lot since the last time. Playing her in front of Canadian fans would be special. I want to test myself at that level again.”

Whether the rematch materializes depends on the tournament draw and early-round results, but fans in Canada are already buzzing at the prospect of a potential Gauff-Mboko showdown. Such a match would not only be a crowd-pleaser but also a symbolic passing-of-the-torch moment—two young, talented, and diverse athletes representing the next generation of women’s tennis. For Mboko, the motivation is clear: she’s not just looking for revenge; she’s chasing growth, experience, and the chance to prove she belongs among the elite. As the tournament kicks off, all eyes will be on her performance—and whether fate will give her the rematch she craves.
